Depressing news for anyone looking forward to Worms: A Space Oddity on the Wii--it lacks the online multiplayer that developer Level 17 had previously promised.

We're positively crushed by the news, but publisher THQ is taking a glass-half-full view, saying, "Worms: A Space Oddity is a social gaming experience that is best enjoyed locally, in a party-game atmosphere with other players."

Curiously, the THQ rep went on to say "Team 17 has proven it can deliver a world class online gaming experience through the popular Worms: Open Warfare 2." So they can deliver a world-class online experience, just not on the Wii? Seriously, you're not helping your case with comments like that.

The THQ spokesperson continued by saying, "Players will get even more fun and satisfaction from being able to see the reaction of their friends and taunting them with attacks face-to-face."

Watching your opponent's reaction as you finish him off with a particularly well-thrown grenade is satisfying, to be sure, but the lack of online is a crushing blow to Space Oddity's desirability, particularly to those who've already picked up Worms for $10 on XBLA.
