Over two months has passed since the file-sharing service Albumbase was shut down, possibly due to an RIAA threat. The site, which allowed users to upload music to temporary hosting accounts such as rapidshare where it could be searched within the Albumbase database, was apparently purchased last year by Tatto Inc. – a group of Babson graduates who recently won a BusinessWeek award for Best Entrepreneurs Under 25.

Tatto shut Albumbase down last November, most likely after having been issued a stern warning by copyright authorities. Commenters on our previous Albumbase post have been exchanging information on where the community is going (Albumwash looks to be the alternative of choice), and the Albumbase site is still down.

That, it would seem, is that. Except it apparently isn't.

I'm still receiving text messages from Albumbase service, indicating that the service still shows at least one sign of life. The latest such message, which arrived yesterday afternoon, reads:

LOG ON 2 ALBUMBASE 4 UPDATES: Christina Aguilera gives bith 2 baby boy, Max Liron Bratman, Saturday in Los Angeles.

I've contacted Tatto CEO Lin Miao
once again (he didn't respond last time) to find out more about whatreally happened with Albumbase, and why these messages continue eventhough other aspects of the service have been taken offline.

Untilthen, are other former Albumbase users still getting these messages? Anyonecare to guess why Albumbase would keep them coming after the rest ofthe service has been shuttered?
