We know concept cars are supposed to be Out There. It's the best way to generate a lot of buzz and get people talking. But Ford has gone over the top with the dashboard of its otherwise groundbreaking Explorer America.
The Explorer America updates the tired old SUV and gives it a coat of green paint by making it smaller and lighter. It also uses one of Ford's new EcoBoost engines, which burn 20 to 30 percent less fuel than Ford's current four- and six-cylinder engines. As we told you last week, they and clean diesels are the wave of the (near) future, and all the automakers are dumping boatloads of cash into them.
But WTF is with that dashboard? Is someone in Ford's design studio a Star Trek fan? There's no way in hell that dash - at least that funky globe thing - will be there when the Explorer America starts rolling off assembly lines in 2010.
So, just as we did with the L.A. Auto Show, we're inviting you to write a caption. The winner gets a Wired T-shirt. We'll pick a winner in a couple of days.
We've got more pics after the jump to further inspire you.
