The Umatilla Chemical Depot had held 156 of the tanks and began the destruction campaign on November 23, 2007. Deseret Chemical Depot in Utah had held 862 of the Cold War-era dispersal devices, which were destroyed in 2004-2005. None of the other six chemical stockpile sites had held the spray tanks.

The TMU-28B spray tank is perhaps more well-known because of the 1968 Dugway Proving Ground sheep incident, in which the Army was accused of sickening thousands of sheep due to an accidental drifting of VX aerosol 30 miles into a nearby valley.
