On Tuesday, more evidence that movie rentals and iTunes compatible DVDs will be a big part of next week's Stevenote surfaced. A new picture uploaded to the Macrumors forum, shows what is presumably an iTunes/iPod compatible digital copy of the forthcoming 20th Century Fox DVD, Family Guy - Blue Harvest.
Upon receiving his copy of the DVD early, the MacRumors tipster noted that it appeared to be compatible with H.264 and a future version of iTunes (7.6). Previous digital copies included with Fox DVDs were encoded in protected Windows Media format, making them incompatible with the iPods and Macs.
If true, this would seemingly confirm the rumor that 20th Century Fox has agreed to include a FairPlay (Apple's brand of DRM) digital file of its films on newly released DVDs. As we mentioned before, this deal is supposed to complement the iTunes digital movie rental arrangement.
As luck would have it, the Family Guy DVD is even slated to be released on Jan. 15 -- the same day Steve Jobs is giving his keynote address at MacWorld. Coincidence?
