The One Laptop Per Child Project is working to set up a U.S. branch this year, promising cheapo laptops for needy American kids. Nicholas Negroponte says they already have a director and chairman picked out for OLPC America and will likely set up stakes in D.C., where the organization will work with state governments to put laptops in schools. Says Negroponte:

We are doing something patriotic...After all, we are (Americans) and there are poor children in America...To have the United Sates be the only country that's not in the OLPC agenda would be kind of ridiculous.
