Picture_1 Have you heard of sweding? It’s the practice of recreating favorite movies from scratch, using household materials and technology. It’s also the main premise of Michel Gondry’s latest film, Be Kind Rewind (see handy synopsis below).

To fuel the frenzy and continue to kindle the highly creative spirit of the film, Gondry recently released his own sweded brand of the trailer, posted below. Beyond being meta (which it totally is), the trailer further showcases Gondry’s quirky brilliance and is great for a long laugh — Gondry doing double-duty as Jack Black and Mos Def is almost too good to be true.

To truly appreciate the hilarity of Gondry’s sweded version, watch the original trailer or check out a quick refresher of the plot, excerpted from Wired’s coverage in the Jan ’08 issue:

"Gondry’s new film, Be Kind Rewind, is both low-tech slapstick and high-concept social commentary. The movie stars Jack Black as Jerry, a junkyard worker who blames his nasty headaches on a local power plant. He sets out to sabotage the plant, but his plan backfires: After a nasty electric shock, he stumbles over to his friend’s video rental store — and erases every movie he touches. To save the store, Jerry and his buddy Mike (played by Mos Def) decide to remake the lost films. High jinks ensue."

Dying to swede yourself or your favorite film? You’re in luck! Hoping to fuel the DIY spirit online, the BKR filmmakers posted a how-to guide online, along with a plethora of sweded movie classics to get amateur auteurs in the mood.
