God of War 2 director Cory Barlog got some gaming in recently, and while he much enjoys Mass Effect, he finds fault with Super Mario Galaxy and Assassin's Creed.
On a recent blog post, Barlog said that Mass Effect "had a lot of moments...that remind me why I love the medium," and that BioWare is "one freaking talented group."
Impressed not only by the "sheer scale of the game," Barlog also praised BioWare for "making the various choices within the story not only work, but actually be compelling."
Barlog observes that Super Mario Galaxy has "[g]reat levels, some of the best art on the Wii, and pretty awesome sound and music," but nevertheless, he's still not crazy about the game.
He chalks his apathy up to the game's "vapid story," saying "I think it is because I just don't care about the why...You think with a franchise this big they would at least put a little effort in the why.'
Assassin's Creed genetic memory twist is what killed Barlog's enthusiasm for the game, though he still appreciates the "fantastic"
art. He figures the "inevitable" sequel "will be pretty good," but hopes the next installment improves upon this one's story and combat, both of which left him flat.
