Nikko Electronics has been promising a real-life R2-D2 projection robot for over a year, and it looks like it will finally come out in the spring. It will retail for $2,500 or so, which is expensive if you think about the fact that the original from the movie was a modified trash can from George Lucas’ kitchen. We've checked out R2 in action here at CES 2008, and while the quality of the projection is not that good, it's a fine item if you're into the Trilogy and have money to burn. (Yes, there were only three Star Wars movies, you hear me?)
The 20”-tall R2 is a DVD projection system, with 480p resolution, built-in speakers, iPod dock, an SD slot, and FM radio.
But here are the best parts: It includes little R2’s signature beeping sounds, you can move him around with a remote control that’s shaped like the millennium falcon, and it has some motion sensors that’ll keep him (it?) upright. But anyone worth their Star Wars commemorative action figures knows that R2-D2 is most fun when it’s being knocked over.
