It's rare that a year goes by during which Mitsubishi doesn't trot out some futuristic reinterpretation of its Eclipse sports coupe, and this year is no exception. This time, it's the radical Concept-RA — radical not so much for its polarizing looks as for its powertrain. It's powered by a DOHC 2.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder direct-injection diesel engine, producing 201 horsepower and a healthy 310 pound-feet of torque. Incorporating the latest notions in clean-diesel technology, including an oxidation catalyst, a nitrous-oxide trap, and a particulate filter, the engine drives all four wheels through Mitsubishi's Super All-Wheel Control setup, adding the Active Steering and Active Suspension Control systems from the Lancer Evolution for good measure. It's an interesting effort, no question about it. Whatever you feel about the shark-nosed shape, the engine (probably a PSA Peugeot Citroën-sourced unit, though Mitsubishi isn't saying) looks like a keeper. Next time, however, let's try to keep it under the hood.
