Gateway's P-series FX Edition laptops are big, orangey and great for gaming. A few minutes with Call of Duty 4, a recent and demanding title, demonstrates that the HDMI-equipped notepad's 8800M GTS video chip can take the strain. Even during intense firefights, there was not a hitch or skip to be seen.
Announced in a variety of trims, the P-171XL FX is the meatiest, with 512 MB of video RAM, a 19" 1920x1200 display, an Intel Mobile Extreme X7900 processor and a HD-DVD drive. Played around with at CES was the lesser P-171S, which has a 17" 1440x900 display, a T8300 Core 2 Duo and standard DVD drive. It's still a bit of a beast, the size and weight of a heavily-laden canteen food tray. Battery life? Whatever it is, Gateway didn't include it in the press release. On laptops like this, batteries are vestigial organs.
