It's pre-PMA crunch time, with camera companies jostling to get mindspace for their new wares before the big photo trade show starts in a week or so. First up today is Canon, which announced a new entry-level SLR. The EOS Rebel XSi sports a 12.2-megapixel sensor., 2.5-inch Live View monitor, light sensitivity up to 1600 ISO, a two-part system to automatically clean the sensor, an SD card slot (friendlier to those upgrading from point-and-shoots) and a rechargeable battery with 50 percent more shooting time than previous models.

The XSi is set to ship in April, priced at $800 for body only or $900 as a kit with the EF 18-55mm lens. Which doesn't seem all that entry-level now that some SLRs are pushing the $500 mark, but Canon does consider itself a premium brand.
