With a $1.35 billion US contract, Argentina plans to build a 710 kilometer high speed rail line from the capital Buenos Aires to Cordoba. In the United States, that $1.35 billion can barely buy a 6-mile subway-surface light rail line San Francisco. Alstom, the manufacturer of the newest New York Subway cars, the trains on the London Tube's Jubilee Line, and not to forget, the TGV that broke the train speed record, was chosen by Argentina to construct this project. With speeds at 320 km/h (199 mph), the 14 hour train ride will reduce to a mere three hours. The new high speed rail line will use a modified version of the France's double decker TGV trains. The final contract will be signed by Alstom in the coming months while the financing is sorted out.
