If battery life is your main complaint with digital cameras or you want to have a really complete disaster kit, Sony is showing a prototype crank-powered digicam. The "Twirl N' Take" camera requires 15 seconds of winding its pizza cutter-like crank to generate enough juice to grab one image. (There's no explanation of what happens if you crank for more than 15 seconds, but given Sony's recent history with batteries, I wouldn't risk it.)
There's no LCD screen, so you have to upload images to see what you've got. Sony has no plans as of now to commercialize the camera, but if it does so, it would likely be aimed as a kiddie camera.
