Sure to set hexagenarians' hearts aflutter from Sun City to Sarasota, the slick Lincoln MKS broke cover at this week's Los Angeles Auto Show. Destined to supplant the body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive, old-as-the-hills Town Car as the brand's flagship sedan, the MKS is derived from the platform underpinning the Ford Taurus (née Five Hundred), itself derived from the excellent Volvo P2 architecture. The MKS features a 3.7-liter V-6 with 270 horsepower (more than the wheezy V-8 in the Town Car), which meets a six-speed manu-matic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. While not quite as sharp as the concept version from the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the production MKS is nonetheless fairly handsome. Pricing starts at less than $38,000, stretching to about $50,000 with all the extras. And don't be surprised to see a version of the Yamaha-developed 4.4-liter V-8 in the Volvo S80 and XC90 show up behind the MKS's slatted grille sometime soon.
