In what seems little more than an eleventh-hour effort to get some ink on a car whose time never really came, Daimler's top-drawer brand, the long-suffering Maybach, has unveiled its 62S Landaulet Study. They're calling it a concept, but don't be fooled: This one's headed for a short production run in the very near future. Inspired by Maybach's (the old Maybach) gargantuan Landaulet models from the 1930s and billed as the world's most powerful chauffeur-driven sedan, the new 62S Landaulet features a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 with 612 horsepower, a fully enclosed forward compartment, and a slide-back black soft-top covering the two rear seats. The white-on-white-with-piano-black-trim show car is set to debut at this month's Dubai Motor Show.

The More You Know: The term "landaulet," referring to a carriage or automobile that's enclosed up front and open at the back, takes its origin from the town of Landau in Germany's Rhineland, where it was invented back in the 18th century.
