The invasion of the 45-nanometer chips enters full swing today with Intel offering 16 new Penryn models.
While this advance is more about energy efficiency than trundling, number-crunching power, the result will be just that: less heat, more grunt.
Best of the consumer options is the the QX9650 3GHz Core 2 Extreme, which will sell for about $1,280 to stupid, rich gamers. Top of the server models is the Xeon 5400, which hums at 3.2 GHz, with a 1.6GHz bus and 12MB of level 2 cache. Other models stretch down to the Xeon 5200, which has half the cores and half the bus speed.
