Sometimes it's healthy to remember that VCs don't just fund hardware and software companies, they also invest in those that make, for example, eco-friendly drywall. Sunnyvale's Serious Materials announced on Thursday that it has received $50 million in funding from New Enterprise Associates, Foundation Capital, and Rustic Canyon Partners.

According to the company, its new product, EcoRock, uses "virtually zero energy in its core production resulting in zero CO2 emissions, giving it the lowest carbon footprint of any drywall product by an order of magnitude." While this fact will not make you the life of the cocktail party, it might actually be important. Serious Materials also says that drywall production accounts for almost 1% of U.S. industrial energy consumption. Pre-housing slump anyway...
