Flickr passed the two billion photos mark yesterday with the photo above from a user by the name of yukesmooks. Flickr has released figures in the past suggesting that between three and five million photos are uploaded to the site everyday.
As Techcrunch points out, Facebook claims some 4.1 billion photos on its site, but of course those aren't publicly browsable and most of them are of some bleary-eyed teenager with a half full container of alcohol in hand.
As yesterday's milestone proves, Flickr continues to grow and there's some interesting stuff coming from the Flickr development team. We're looking forward to the Places Pages which were announced at the Web 2.0 Summit back in October.
Using Place Pages you'll be able to search maps by place name and see a dynamic set of the most interesting photos taken in that location. From there you can tunnel into geotagged photos and see the networks formed around locations, browsing by things like popular tags, Flickr groups, featured photographers, as well as metadata like time and temperature.
The Place Pages feature isn't live yet and Flickr hasn't made any formal announcements outside the Web 2.0 Summit, but it's expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
