Not content to let Linux-based laptops and bargain-basement boxes steal all the thunder this holiday season, Dell (and by association, Microsoft) have struck back with a smattering of excellent deals.
Until November 26th, you can pick up a $400 Vostro 1000 that will wipe the floor with the Asus Eee PC, sporting a dual-core AMD chip, twice the memory, and (if our calculations are correct) a good* thirty times* the storage space. Oh, and did we mention it comes with an 8X DVD burner? All apples-to-oranges comparison aside, that's some serious bang-for-the-buck. Just be sure to upgrade the battery -- the included 4-cell is rated at a pathetic 29 watt-hours.
Meanwhile, those who missed Wal-Mart's blue light special Everex gPC would do well to check out the $350 Vostro 200. While rather similar in terms of raw power (both are lacking) the Vostro actually comes with a display -- a 19" widescreen LCD monitor that retails for $200 all by its lonesome.
Free shipping (and XP upgrade) on both machines. Ladies and gents, start your bargain-hunting engines.
__Update 11/21: __As noted by astute, disappointed reader djclintoris, Dell sold out of the Vostro 1000 laptop yesterday afternoon. When reached for comment, a Dell customer service representative said that stocks will not be replenished at the $400 price point.
