With 2007 quickly coming to a close, it's about time for another round of Digg rumors. The tech blogosphere hasn't quite graduated to the point of reading like the Weekly World News, so a lot of the speculation floating around about the popular social news site should sound familiar. The biggest yarn presently making its way through the wire is one of our personal favorites -- a pending Digg sale.
Yesterday tech gossip site Valleywag fanned the flames by claiming that sources close to Digg are hinting at the site closing its sale to a large media company for $300 - $400 million soon.
The report goes on to opine that Digg's $100 million ad deal with Microsoft should bolster the popular startup's prospects as acquisition bait. Naturally, CEO Jay
Adelson has kept mum and Digg poster boy Kevin Rose (pictured right) has kept equally quiet -- save for the occasional equivocal comment.
What's most interesting is that this common yarn is typically paired with some degree of truth. Though it never came to fruition,
speculation of a sale to Yahoo momentarily got legs back in 2006. And even Adelson has acknowledged that conversations with large media companies are an on-going occurence for the site. With the current bullishness of the startup market we wouldn't be surprised if Digg is talking to someone in earnest, but only time will tell if any of the company's suitors are ready to go the distance.
