MSNBC announced today that it has acquired the social news site, Newsvine, for an undisclosed amount. Although Newsvine is now an MSNBC property, Mike Davidson, the founder of Newsvine, says the two companies will continue operating separately.
The plan, according to Davidson, is for newsvine to continue to operate as is while MSNBC will slowly incorporate some of the Newsvine technology into its own site. No details have been announced regarding which elements of Newsvine MSNBC is interested in using.
Newsvine functions somewhat like Digg, with users submitting and voting on stories, though the content is far less technology oriented. Newsvine allows you to “seed” stories, just as you would on Digg or Reddit, with a link and short description, but Newsvine also lets you write a full article if you wish, which makes it something of a player in the emerging “citizen journalism” movement.
Newsvine launched on March 1, 2006 and, according to company, boast nearly 1.2 million unique visitors per month.
