A new report by research group Strategy Analytics says the iPhone is now the fourth best-selling handset in the U.S. As AT&T's top-selling device during the third quarter -- accounting for nearly 13 percent of overall sales -- the groups says the device could even usurp the Motorola RAZR V3 (currently the No. 1 U.S. phone) in the coming quarters.
"The sales trajectory we are observing with the iPhone could make it the top selling device in the U.S. over the next 1-2 quarters," Strategy Analytics' Barry Gilbert said.
Apple and AT&T sold approximately 1.1 million iPhones during the third quarter, according to Strategy Analytics, bringing the total numbers of units sold since launch to 1.33 million.
The group also notes that demographic studies show that average iPhone buyer is somewhere between 20 and 30 years old, "college-educated and fairly wealthy, coming from a household with six-figure income." No surprise there, certainly. What is interesting though is that almost 25 percent of iPhone owners also happen to be between 50 and 60, showing that that old(er) folks also love them some iPhone, too. This actually falls in line with other studies about the Mac user base.
Last year, Metafacts said that despite Apple's efforts to cast their devices as strictly for the young and hip, as much as 46 percent of Apple's U.S. installed user base is 55 or older. Apple, of course, refuted those findings, saying that its own customer data shows that only around 20 percent of Mac users are over the age of 55.
