Confirming that a platform is the new must-have for any social network, Hi5 announced today that it will be releasing its own to the developer community in the coming year, according to VentureBeat. The timing would place Hi5 well behind Facebook, which released its platform in May, but widget kings Slide and RockYou expressed enthusiasm nonetheless for the new audience Hi5 could serve up.
According to recent ComScore data, says VentureBeat, Hi5 has 35 million users—the same number globally as Facebook. As I heard from Hi5 CEO Ramu Yalamanchi last week at the Millenium Growth Conference, 75% of Hi5's users are outside the US, with market leadership in parts of Latin America. Hi5 has already translated its site into Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Romanian, and Polish.
