Aah, the annual "Whither E-Books?" story, in which the author recounts more than a decade of false starts and overblown promises and then describes how the market is really poised to take off now. (And gets to use the word "whither.") This time it's BusinessWeek, which waxes hopefully about rising sales of electronic textbooks, Amazon's puzzling and pricey EV-DO device, Sony's revamped Reader and a few upcoming reading gadgets from people you mostly never heard of.

Upshot: "Free" is still the only price point at which people start to feel compelled about electronic books, and dead trees still have quite a first-mover advantage.
