BlackBerry Unite: Home Network Service Aims at Kids

RIM (partnered with Spain's Telefónica) hopes that the sexy appeal of schedule sharing and email will win over the kids.... Little Johnny might look like he's asking Mom to come pick him up early from school, but he's really just checking the BitTorrent folder on the home machine.

Bb Unite ScreenBlackBerry, not content with turning thousands of businesspeople into hopeless email addicts, is now coming after your children. BlackBerry Unite is a new service launching in Europe which will allow up to five users to share content and information. RIM (partnered with Spain's Telefónica) hopes that the sexy appeal of schedule sharing and email will win over the kids. We took a quick look at the rundown of Unite services and found the real killer app: File sharing.

That's right. Because the hub of the network is a home PC, any member of the group can remotely access music and photos. Little Johnny might look like he's asking Mom to come pick him up early from school, but he's really just checking the BitTorrent folder on the home machine.

Networking the family is a clever promotional idea, especially if Mom or Dad already use a BlackBerry. A strategy strangely in line with the Crackberry nickname: The first one is free. Then you start paying.
