Audi said today that its sales in China blew past those in the U.S. at a 26 per cent clip, totaling 76,168 cars from January through September versus sales of 68,479 cars Stateside. This is only the most recent piece of evidence that the American luxury-car goldmine is going dry, and when you factor in the negative effects of the huge mark ups instituted by German luxury car companies in the states, it's not to far-out to imagine China, and not the US or Europe, becoming the driving force behind the development of high-end autos. But all is not rosy in China; The Frankfurt Motor show saw a look-alike made-in-China Mercedes' Smart and BMW X5last month. Legal action is pending.
