Ubiquiti Networks is to sell 700 Mhz Mini-PCI cards in anticipation of the open wireless internet of the future. Even though the band is yet to be auctioned, and any standards are yet to emerge, the XtremeRange7 has the radio and is ready to roll.
Sporting 600mW of power output, it has a range up up to 50km and is fitted with shielding to help prevent it interfering with nearby electronics. In principle, it could deliver up to 50Mbps over four channels over TCP/IP—a data rate that's just about as fast as we'd want it to be.
For those who claim to be electromagnetically-sensitive, the prospect of millions of these carpeting the Earth with 50km-range pulsed radio waves is, basically, armageddon. For the rest of us, it's potentially a very pleasing outcome indeed: an alternative to the cellular industry and its disgusting contracts.
