New York’s Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art has just opened a show exploring the migration of comics from print to online and how the unique formatting and design of webcomics has opened up a whole new world of creative possibilities.
Infinite Canvas: The Art of Webcomics presents an excellent selection of original artwork, prints and digital displays of some of the best web comics around, including Penny Arcade, Scary Go Round and Supernatural Law. A special section is devoted to New York online super collective ACT-I-VATE, featuring the work of Dean Haspiel, Dan Goldman, Simon Fraser, Josh Neufeld and several others. (Infinite Canvas, Sept. 14 – Jan. 24, 2008; 594 Broadway #401, NY, NY)
Also worth checking out is MoCCA’s free Monday night series of talks and roundtables. Recent events have included Gary Panter talking about creating the set designs for “Peewee’s Playhouse,” and a discussion about the history of violence in anime. Next week’s discussion (Sept, 24, 6:30pm) will be on Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel “Fun Home.”
