The Mercedes S-Class was the first--and possibly the only--street car to see production with distance control sensors that automatically bring a car to a dead stop in a traffic jam and then bring the car back up to a pre-set speed as traffic picks up again. Now, Mercedes is about to implement another head-of-its-time control: a laser system that will scan the road surface ahead of you and then adjust the S-Class' suspension accordingly. Can you image what this could mean when barreling along the craters in such places as Route 3 in N.J. before the Lincoln Tunnel?

The technology, which is slated for the S-Class, was part of Mercedes F700 concept announcement:

From various acceleration sensors the system’s control unit gets information about the driving situation at any time and compares it with the data of the pressure sensors in the ABC
hydraulics and the data of the level sensors on the control arms.
