There's been no shortage of spy shots to stir up enthusiasts, but Nissan itself decided to do a little stirring in advance of October's Tokyo Motor Show, going live with a microsite dedicated to the forthcoming GT-R supercoupe. But, as unexpectedly as the site's photos appeared, they were gone. The Japanese-market page now states: "The GT-R Proto has gone back under wraps. For now." Details are still tantalizingly few, but the company did note that pricing for the GT-R, the production version of which is set to debut at the show, would start at 7.8 million yen in Japan (about $68,000). Although previous generations of the car went by the name "Skyline GT-R," the new model will be known simply as "Nissan GT-R." We think the looks are a little iffy (particularly the front end), but can only assume that its performance will be anything but: Rumor has it that GT-R mules are busy setting records around Germany's famed Nürburgring circuit. Expect some 470 horsepower, likely from a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-6, with power directed to all four wheels through a paddle-operated seven-speed sequential manual gearbox.

The 40th Tokyo Motor Show starts October 26 at the Makuhari Messe convention center, and runs through November 11.
