If you live in a landlord-controlled apartment where you need to write a book-length proposal to change even the smallest of wall fixtures, there’s a new way to add some style to your home. Sha-Do’s cool light lamps, created by a German design company, illuminate figures on walls through a shadow pantomime design. The lighting chassis is supposed to fit onto any bulb socket, though it appears that each bulb is specifically tailored to the size of the lamp design, meaning it could prove hard to replace a broken one. This item won a recent 2007 European innovation competition for light design.
The shadow measures up to three meters in diameter, but what’s cool is that the actual projection is adjustable in size and direction. You could even create a more interesting look of larger projections through coordinating multiple lamps. The design itself is created by cutting out patterns within a glass structure along the sides, and there are five different types of patterns that are currently available.
Yet the lamps are not as inviting when you realize that it’s about $410 per lamp, without shipping and handling from the Old World. Perhaps just painting the walls will be enough of a change for your sad apartment, even if it means hiding it from the old and crusty landlord-cum-dictator.
