BMW softened the arrival of yet another freakin' SUV &mdash the bizarre, fastback-styled Concept X6 &mdash by simultaneously rolling out a somewhat more socially conscious version of the same vehicle. Dubbed the X6 ActiveHybrid, it features a unique (for now, at least) hybrid-drive system with a two-mode continuously variable transmission with preset ratios for low-speed and higher-speed use, allowing its two electric motors to give a little oomph in situations where traditional hybrids don't &mdash on the highway. The result, says BMW: fuel savings of up to 20 percent.
