Wireless home networking between devices gets a step closer thanks to Ofcom, the UK communications regulator. Ofcom has given the go-ahead for Ultra-Wideband (UWB), a radio technology which can share the airwaves with other wireless signals without interference. It does this by using low-power transmitters, spreading the signal over a roughly 500MHz area of spectrum.
The ruling means that wireless USB can be implemented in cameras, MP3 players, and other peripherals without a license, which should speed uptake and keep prices down. And as UWB has a theoretical bandwidth of at 2Gbps at up to 30m (100 feet), it should be able to handle the traffic easily.
