It looks like our skepticism regarding the $3 million TripAdvisor Facebook application acquistion rumor was well founded. TripAdvisor representative Brian Payea got back to us with the following statement regarding the InsideFacebook rumor. Payea said, “This is untrue. Beyond that, we do not have any comment.” Since everyone is going to town with rumors, allow us to read a couple of things into that very brief statement.
The statement is worded in such a way that there is room left open for: A) a possible acquisition at a different price point, which would still make the original rumor untrue, or B) a polite denial that allows the company to explore an acquisition of the app in the future. Either way, for now, the Facebook apps-for-sale bonanza party you might have had planned for tonight can now be cancelled thanks to the cold water reality provided by our friend at TripAdvisor, Mr. Payea.
