The New Republic posted a statement yesterday on its review of the writings of Scott Thomas Beauchamp, a U.S. soldier who wrote a series of pseudonymous articles for the magazine. The magazine now says it has corroborated his accounts, but with one significant error: a disfigured woman he claims he (and another soldier) mocked was in Kuwait, not Iraq. Howard Kurtz, the Washington Post's media critic, has the most even-handed and sensible write-up of the whole affair.
