Not intensely scientific or completely damning, we bring you the results of a random Compete survey of three incredibly hyped Web launches from the last few months: Truemors, Mahalo and FunnyOrDie. I like this sampling because each site does something totally different, so in this case arguments about niche focus take a back seat to pure popularity.

As you can see, humor-plus-video are where it’s at as FunnyOrDie appears to be outpacing the other sites (represented by those tiny blue/red splotches at the bottom) by several orders of magnitude. To be fair, FOD had a major Hollywood star attached to its launch, but the other sites boast two of the most well known names in the tech world who both regularly boast of their intense media schedules, having to turn down speaking engagements, and A-List blogger status.

Apparently, all that tech hype can't compare to plain and simple funny content. If this graph is proof of anything, it's that the Internet has finally mainstreamed itself out of the tiny geek demographic some analysts still like to tag it with.
