Blanket WiFi coverage in downtown San Francisco will have to wait, as Google, Earthlink and the city are having troubles getting along, sending the deal, at least temporarily, into the electromagnetic dungeon. From CNN:

"On Wednesday, a committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors delayed voting on a contract for the municipal wireless network, after failing to receive a response from EarthLink on proposed contract alterations."

It all follows some hedging, humming and hawing from the EarthLink CEO Rolia Huff, who allegedly said things that "cast doubt on the company's desire to move forward on such municipal wireless deals." The city decided it wanted a shorter term on the deal, and it's still waiting for a reply. Therefore, the approval expected last week will have to wait until the fall.

Google is clearly champing at the bit to get its public wireless schemes going; it's such a shame it can't go it alone. All we need now is for the WiFi healthscare people to roll into town...
