Some companies make their product ranges easy to understand, and some baffle us with numbers (read: all video card makers). Intel is taking steps to simplify the naming of its chip lineup, mostly by compressing the baffling range of Core Duo chips into one umbrella term; Core 2 Processor.
We applaud this move, as even us hardened bloggers sometimes end up at Wikipedia for a reminder of the differences between Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme, and Core Fresh Hits. The trouble is, we all still need to know which chips is which. Just calling them all the same thing thing may look tidier on the sales ticket, but Intel has yet to reveal how the differing specs will be indicated.
Other consolidations include the Viiv and vPro lines becoming Core 2 Viiv and Core 2 vPro, both Pentiums become just "Pentium" and Itanium 2 drops its number suffix. Penryn will remain a town in Cornwall.
