HP's MediaSmart server box, the hardware vanguard of Microsoft's forthcoming Windows Home Server software, hit retail databases today, revealing price points for the two models on offer. The 500GB model will be $600, while the 1TB model will set you back $750. Availability is still set for September 15.
I'd pay a grand for that top model if it was wedded to a built-in, MediaLounge-style player, with HDMI, a good set of codecs and a more lounge-friendly form factor. As HP's baby is basically a bare-bones stack of 3.5" hard drives, however, it ain't gonna happen. How about it, D-Link?
