Taiwan based Acer has reached an agreement to acquire U.S. computer maker Gateway for $710 million. The deal solidifies the combined company's position as the number-three computer maker on the planet shipping up to 20 million PCs per year.

Acer Chairman J.T. Wang (pictured right) said, "The acquisition of Gateway and its strong brand immediately completes Acer's global footprint, by strengthening our US presence. This will be an excellent addition to Acer's already strong positions in Europe and Asia." With a total combined revenue of $15 billion, this deal should also end any lingering doubts from the West that Taiwan has arrived as a truly global technology player.
