Car mounted cams are getting to be all the rage. Google has its Street View 360º cars running around and the cops have been filming perps for years. Now you too can join the car cam action (if you live in Japan) with the Clarion DriveEye, an accident-triggered video camera.
The DriveEye mounts on the windshield and sits there until you brake suddenly, when an acceleration sensor kicks it into life. You get 20 seconds of 30fps, 640 x 400 video recorded straight to an included 128 MB Compact Flash card. The footage is buffered and cuts out five seconds after impact, to make sure you actually have the relevant part for your insurance claim. There is a manual switch, too, which might be useful if you get car-jacked.
Similar to an airplane Black Box, the DriveEye is designed to withstand a wreckage. A magnesium frame and all solid state construction means it should survive, even if you don't. ¥50,000 ($420).
