Linksys, the once-independent consumer division of network hardware giant Cisco Systems, is doomed. Or, at least, the brand name is.
Cisco chairman and CEO John Chambers told a gaggle of reporters in Europe that the name will "come, over time, into a Cisco brand," and that the only reason Linksys' name was ever kept was because it was better-known to consumers.
Linksys routers are famed among gadget fans for being easy to add advanced features into, thanks to a licensing screw-up that forced the company to open-source the firmware on a leading range.
