In a post Virginia Tech and Columbine world, threatening letters from someone claiming to be the messenger of God are particularly worrisome. That's why Jeffry Mitton, a professor and chair of the department of ecology and developmental biology at the University of Colorado has requested a restraining order against Michael Korn, who he believes sent letters and emails threatening violence on Mitton and several other professors in his department. (More on the threats, in chronological order of posting, here, here and here.)

The court has not yet granted the restraining order, and Mitton said that Korn seems to be MIA. When police checked his apartment (according to Mitton, the police would not confirm this) they found it sublet to a new tenant, and Korn and his wife were nowhere to be found. Also, his wife quit her job.

Mitton said Korn has visited his building on campus in Boulder several times, and told him face to face that Korn believes he is the messenger of God, and that God is angry at Mitton for ignoring His messenger. Korn has been pestering the evolutionary biology department for about a year, and it was mostly an annoyance until recently, Mitton said.

We got worried about our safety when there were letters that came in delivered when the building was supposed to be locked shoved underneath doors had a skull and crossbones. Mine was completely sealed in tape and in it was a quote: every true Christian should be ready and willing to take up arms to kill the enemies of
Christian society.' He makes it clear that the enemies of Christian society are evolutionary biologists.

The letter wasn't signed by Korn, but bore the moniker "Makom Ministries," a name that appears on his web site.
Whether he has an actual ministry is doubtful, Mitton said he would
"bet an ice cream cone" that he has no followers (except for maybe his wife).

In any case, Mitton is looking forward to resolving the issue, he said he's lost about a week of work to meetings about security (which has been stepped up in his building), police proceedings, etc.
