Looks aren't always deceiving. The goofy front fork suspension system on this pricey 9-speed delivers a decidedly un-bumpy ride. Yet, the strange aesthetics also make this bike one of the more, complex and frustrating folders we've ever tested. Even with step-by-step photos, the learning curve is significantly high. When we finally got the hang of it (22 seconds), the finished package wasn't entirely compact-the front wheel juts out at a 20-degree angle. Plus, you must remember to put the bike in the highest gear before folding. Otherwise, despite two plastic chainwheel discs, a chain catcher on the derailleur, and a chain tensioner, the drive chain will pop off, requiring you to painstakingly reset it. This Birdy in one greasy hand is definitely not worth two in the bush.

No internal hub adds to a less compact fold. Day one: tossed the folded bike into the trunk of a cab - en route the chain dislodged from the gears and wedged itself between the frame and chainwheel disc, requiring a screwdriver and a lot of swearing to fix.
