The Scott Thomas story just gets better and better, or maybe worse and worse. It now turns out that the writer is married to a reporter-researcher at The New Republic.
According to the Washington Post, Franklin Foer, the editor-in-chief of The New Republic, said the author's marriage to a staff member was "part of the reason why we found him to be a credible writer."
A number of military bloggers -- and Michael Goldfarb of the Weekly Standard -- have raised some pertinent criticisms and doubt about the writing, which paints a brutal portrait of U.S. soldiers in Iraq. That said, I'd like to see something more than speculation before I condemn a soldier serving in Iraq of out-right fabrication.
Regardless of anyone's views on this issue, now is a good time to rent the DVD of Shattered Glass, the movie based on the adventures of Stephen Glass, the one-time New Republic writer who fabricated a number of articles while employed at the magazine.
It's an excellent movie.
