Early last month Foster + Partners unveiled plans to create a city in Abu Dhabi that will have no carbon or waste footprint. Seems like a tall order, but if they can pull it off it could change developement for good.

The 3.7-square-mile town will include a large photovoltaic power plant, wind farms, research fields, and plantations that will self-sustain the city. There will be no cars in the vicinity, rather a rapid transport system will link different areas. Shaded walkways will allow people to also walk or bike to their destinations.

The development is set to open in late 2009.
