I have to admit it. I'm not really a big fan of Father's day. The budget seldom allows me to receive what I really want. I'm always nervous about spilling coffee on myself when I eat in bed. There is never peace and quiet with three boys 1-6.
But I'm going to try harder to enjoy it after reading this editorial (HT). Mr. Woodlief puts being a dad in perspective after a time in US society where Dads weren't always considered that important or even thought to be a negative influence. I think that attitude is starting to shift.
One of my fondest memories is of my dad handing me a rifle and a box of 50 .22 shells behind the house and trusting me not to shoot them over the horizon. Definitely a candidate for the sequel to The Dangerous Book for Boys. He understood what we boys needed.
