According to Brownlee family legend, the first thing my squinty neonate eyes googly focussed on when I was taken home from the hospital was the Creature Double Feature on Boston's WLVI Channel 56: four glorious hours of Sunday afternoon rubber monster brawling. My mother, rightly annoyed by the Caesarian stitches in her side, went to take a nap, entrusting me to the care of my father. She woke up to discover me perched on his lap, happily gurgling while watching a werewolf movie. Although my mother was horrified, now that I'm an adult, I have to admit to seeing my Dad's side in all of this: monster movies are part of a boy's classical education.
