It used to be that guys like Herodotus and Antipater of Sidon picked the ancient buildings known as the seven wonders of the world. But the latest effort, called the "New 7 Wonders of the World," has blown the selection process wide open. So far more than 50 million votes have poured in from around the world via text messaging, phone and online voting. The Pyramids of Giza were given a free pass, since they are the only survivors from the original list, and at last count the Great Wall, the Colosseum and Machu Picchu were leading the pack of 21 contenders for seven additional positions. Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber started the campaign in 1999, whittling an original list of 200 nominations down to the current list. Voting closes midnight July 6, and the list will be revealed the next day in Lisbon.
